How can I read true milage from ECM, PCM, or TCM

All,
I have been looking at a few XJs and one of my concerns is actual vehicle mileage, e.g. some of the odometer readings seem way too low for the age of the vehicle.
Does anyone know how I can read the true mileage from a ECM, PCM, or TCM? Is there an inexpensive device that I can plug in to get the information?
Also, is such a tool universal to most auto brands?

Thanks

Mileage is stored in the BCM and you'll need a DRB scan tool to read it.

You can also run the VIN on mycarfax.com, if you have inspections in your state or the PO brought it to reputable shops, the mileage will have to have been reported.

Not a problem. It is free as well!

I would say when the vehicles were dedicated daily drivers, anything from 10 to 15k a year would be pretty standard. I have a second vehicle and I only put 3 to 4k on my Cherokee this year. Just keep that in mind.
