Default How Bad Is 150,000 Miles???

Hi,
Looking at 95/99 Jeep Cherokees, and seeing a LOT of high mileage!

Wondering how much of a chance I am taking on buying one of these?

Looking as I only want to pay no more than 2/3 K for one!

Thanks!

150k? Barely broken in. The 4.0 can see well over 300k plus if its taken care of

First off WELCOME.

That's it in a nut shell. "if it's been taken care of". Finding one whose owner has kept maintenance records is always nice.

The '95 through '99 XJ's are produced by Chrysler.

AMC until '87 then Chrysler took over until the end in 2001.

Dont let the chrysler name fool you, jeeps are very reliable vehicles. 99 was from what i hear the best year. then after 2000 and 2001 the heads are known to crack so be wary of that but overall jeeps are awesome vehicles! mine has 202k miles and still goes strong. just keep the maintenance up to date which is very minimal at best and it should run for a very long time. also if you see a jeep past 99 ask if the head has been changed or not.

Hi,
Thanks!

What did they do to fix the cracked head problem?

I want a manual tranny, are they good in these JEEPS?

150,000 miles is less mileage than I have on any of my vehicles if maintained 200k doesn't bother me with something as tough and simple to work on as the 4.0. I try to stick with vehicles with a strong track record and easy to fix .

They fixed it in 2002 with the TUPY (name of the foundry) head in the WJ (Grand Cherokee), and TJ (Wrangler), but with the XJ being discontinued in 2001 it never got the updated head (unless a previous owner replaced it already).

Hi,
Thanks everyone!

I'm assuming the 4.0L straight 6, is the desirable engine to get?

How fast are you guys running these JEEPS with that engine on the Interstate???

I've been up to 100mph but that's it, wasn't too bad just a little shakey and loud, not the most quiet ride.
