horrible skreeching sound, power steering pump?
i have a 2000 cherokee 4.0l auto with about 124000 on it. if i startup and give my jeep gas it makes this horrible screeching sound like a slipping belt but more ear piercing for probably 3-5 sounds usually then go away. sometimes it will also do it in gear when i take of from a light. i popped the hood and revved it with the throttle body and its sounds like its from the steering pump area and you can feel it if you have your hand on the resevior when it does it. im not sure of the history of the pump but looks to be original. i had a hose leak on it that i recently fixed but about 3 weeks ago it went dry. today is the first time i heard the noise. i think its the pump but was wondering if anyone had this happen to them before.

I agree. It sounds like a belt issue to me. If the pump was bad or having an issue it would be more consistent. Check and make sure your belt is in good shape and has proper tension. Adjustment over time will be needed since we still rock the almighty manual tensioner!
