Hood Won't Close
My driver's side hood latch isn't catching on the bar and won't close all the way. If I push down I can hear and feel it engage but then when I left off pressure I hear the latch release and voila, the hood stays popped open. I'm afraid I'll have it fly back up on my communte home (50 miles, all interstate) so I'm looking for a fix ASAP.
Also I did spray it down with PB Blaster and Deep Creep so nothing is sticking. |

You say its not sticking... but are you sure and have you checked the whole hood latch assembly. Mine sticks at the bellcrank. Try to move it with a screw driver and make sure that its all the way released.

I'm sure it's not sticking. The bellcrank and both latches have been oiled down and are operating smoothly and don't bind. I've closed the latch with a screwdriver and the amount of force needed to open the latch is minimal.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking I'll have to do. That or go straight to some Mr. Gasket locking hood pins... |
My prblem is the right latch not the driver the driver closes fine but the passenger latch doesnt. In order for it to close i have to raise my hood very high and let it fall in order for it to work.any clue on what it could be:help:

I have that issue at times..found out the cable was sticking...when I pulled the hood release in the cab, it wouldnt spring back..so, when I went to close the hood it wouldnt "stick"..it would appear down till I hit a bump and it would pop up (hell of a way to find out haha) so now I always pull the release and then manually push it back in and it latches..

I had the same problem and I found that the hoop that the latch catches on was bent down just a bit. All I did was bend it back up and it took care of the problem.

It's a 2 year old post why bump it now? I think he may have fixed it already... Also if you need help say something and don't hope that someone knows your problem. |

1998 Jeep XJ SPRING - Hood Latch
I am looking for a replacement for SPRING - Hood Latch - Part Number: 55029718 ; J5016028; T0638499
Everyplace I look says the part is discontinued What is the correct replacement spring? |
Call your local dealer and see if they have one or if anyone in their network had one. Some dealers will still have discontinued parts in their stock. There are several online Mopar parts sources, make sure you've checked all of them.
Have you checked Quadratec, summit, etc? Check Crown and Omix-Ada and see if they make a matching product. If all that fails, you may have to hit the junkyard. |
Can't close my hood either!
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I used to think I had it figured out, it seemed to prefer the gentle touch. It's been lubed, tweaked and tested. Nothing works anymore. Help!
