Default OBDI port

I am a newbie I am wondering if my 95 XJ sport has a OBDI port and if so is it worthwhile buying the reader?

Yes, there is... Jeep calls it a Data Link Connector and it is located on a pigtail at the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) (the "computer") located on the inside of the left front fender. If you buy a reader, make sure it is capable of reading OBD I and has the proper connector. Most readers you encounter on the market today will be for OBD II which has replaced OBD I since 1996. Be aware that you can obtain the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) by cycling the ignition key in the proper sequence and counting the number of flashes of the CHECK ENGINE lamp. You will then need to refer to a repair manual to decode the number indicated by the flashes. This feature makes a reader somewhat redundant.

The ABS Data Link Connector and ABS Control Module are found inside the vehicle to the right of the driver on a 95 XJ if so equipped. The PCM and its associated Data Link Connector on the 95 XJ are found under the hood as mentioned in my previous post...this is per the 1995 XJ FSM. The Data Link Connector you are looking for is a black 6 cavity, 4 pin connector on a pigtail near the PCM.

I got a 2000 Cherokee, and suggestions on what kind of reader to get? My check engine light just popped on this morning. It seems to be driving just fine, not really sure what the problem could be.

Get the Craftsman OBDII reader without the case. With the case it adds $40-$50 for a plain looking case.

My shop class has the full blown kit and it's super easy to use.

You're resurrecting a really old post. It's better to start a new post and to state what year Cherokee you have. Then people can help without having to go back through the original post from 6 years ago.
