Default Hollow sound in rear diff on decel

Hi all, Just picked up an older XJ for my son. Pretty low miles and seems to be well-maintained. On the trip home I rode in the back, and noticed a noise. Kind of hollow-sounding, rhythmic metallic noise, like a light tap. It only occurs when decelerating. Any thoughts from the collective XJ wisdom?

Hrmpf. The Chilton manual is ... less than helpful on this particular problem. It shows how to replace the pinion seal, not the bearing. Are we talking full rebuild of the rear diff for this?

And yeah, I know, Chilton manuals are not the most detailed. Or accurate. I'm used to Bentley manuals but they are $$$, and I've never seen them for US vehicles.

Haven't cracked into it yet. Aside from this noise it seems pretty smooth so I don't anticipate anything that drastic yet, but we'll see I guess.
