Hitch Question

Hi Everyone,

I was at the wrecking yard today and came across a 1995 XJ with what appeared to be a new trailer hitch mounted below the rear bumper. I would love to have one and the price seemed right. Planning to go back Monday afternoon and snag it. Any reason that it won't be a perfect fit on my '89?

None I can think of

make sure you grab the nut strips that sit in the frame rails behind the bumper. you will need to remove the bumper to access them. or you can try to find them new, but be warned, they are not that easy to come across, it seems.

a little pricier but might be worth it if you also want to mount a bumper with recovery points

Luckily they are easy to fabricate. :)

that's all i did, but not everyone has the tools or ability. nice to know someone here is making them. most dealers discontinued them years ago.

Remove its bumper and bust the rivet that holds them to frame. Hammer and long screw driver or tire iron workes perfect. Nothing stronger than factory.

if it has the steel gas tank skid plate grab it too.
Like others said don't forget the nut strips.
Some of those especially the factor ones used a funky torx head stud that supported the steel gas tank skid, and then the receiver hitch was nutted to them.

Also, make sure you have metric and standard tools. Oddly enough one side is SAE, the other side is Metric. I forget which side is which, was years ago that I installed mine.

I make new nutstrips for situations like this.

On my '92 I just fished nuts and washers down the frame and hit the bolts with the impact at 150PSI. Pity the next guy who has to remove them..
