High RPM cold start

I a 86 XJ wagoneer 2.8l v6 with a carb. When I start it cold
the rpms are up take and take a min to come back down.
Could it be the timing, I'm firing on all 6 :confused1:

You should have the automatic air with the vacuum motor, try to unplug the vacuum hose from it before you start it.

How high are the rpms?

AFAIK an idle of about 1000-1200 rpm would be normal for a carbed vehicle as it warms up (my moms old impala).
If the 2.8s have auto choke (not sure) the choke is closed when you start the vehicle and it slowly opens as the engine warms. Next time It does the high idle at a cold start, give it a quick LIGHT rev, dont redline it lol. If your “problem” is just the carb keeping it in high idle (something you may not be used to if you’ve never had a carbed vehicle in winter), then it will kick out of high idle and go to a normal ~750rpm, Or it will just stall out if its not warm enough...

Check your vacuum hoses when running, should hear noise from one that's broken. Or put a gauge on it and see.
