question, what front axle is a "230mm?" I'm a little disappointed that with all those HD options it doesn't have a D44 rear, tow hitch, or trailer wiring, but the latter two can I assume be added easily. I'm 99.44% sure that I'm going to buy it anyway as I've been in it before, other than some hail damage it's really nice and it apparently just passed inspection today and the only thing it needed was new tires which she went ahead and bought. Anything in those specs that you think should be cause for alarm?

D44 was only an option on early early models

230mm is the Dana 30. IIRC, the D44 rear hasnt been a stock option since like '89. The rear D35 that it has is the weaker of the 2 offered in the '99 but if you arent going to put huge tires on it and offroad alot, it shouldnt be a problem.

Thanks guys, I know how to turn wrenches but I'm a complete n00b when it comes to Jeeps so please bear with me if I ask something dumb, the last Jeep I even rode in besides this one was my great-grandfather's J10 pickup My dad had a Scout II for years which is really the only similar vehicle I've ever driven. (great 4x4 by the way, hope I don't **** anyone off by saying that.) I don't really plan to off-road this guy, it's more intended as a replacement for my F-150 which I hate because a) it's huge (unwieldy in DC-area traffic) b) it's slow and c) it's not 4WD so I don't trust it if I have to drive through the mountains in winter. It'll really be an occasional hauler/tow vehicle and used for road trips if I really have to see my family and the weather is bad enough that I don't want to drive my company car.

So please educate me, what are the differences between the rear axle options? Should this vehicle have a limited slip, or would that be explicitly called out on the build sheet if it had it?

thanks again!

try out this site it has alot of good info: http://jeephorizons.com/tech/xjstockspecs.html
As for the limited slip some came with Trac-Lok in the rear. The build sheet should list it if you did have one. From what Ive been told if you do have it, it should say so on the axle but i cant remember what to look for. maybe someone else can chime in and help out with that

OK, I'm going to call her tonight and work out details... No trac-lock on build sheet, what I posted is what I got from Chrysler in its entirety (except for the personal information.)

I would like a trailer hitch. What would you guys recommend? Also, is there an easy wiring kit? (I know I actually had to cut an aftermarket converter box out of a friend's Cherokee once when it burned up and his lights went nuts... but that was years ago, don't remember what brand)

What fluids should I use for initial maintenance? I do have a stock of Redline Heavy Shockproof and Redline D4 ATF, would those be appropriate?

thanks again (wow, I'm already down on page 5, this is an active forum!)

1990 still had a Dana 44 option.

The 4 pin trailer wiring harness is just a simple plug and play. A 7 blade wiring harness is a bit more work, but some of them include the 4 pin t-connector.

Another telltale sign of a factory installed Trac-Loc is the warning decal in the glovebox.

you guys have all the info. I do, the vehicle is about 5 hours away from me. I remember it being red with a tan interior, and other than that I trust that my cousin wouldn't rip me off, she's pretty cool. And I know the vehicle has been in her care for at least 5 years probably more. Actually thanks for reminding me, I was gonna call DMV to try to figure out best way to handle interstate title transfer.

You can change the differentials with standard 75-90 or 80-90 gear oil. No need for synthetic motorcycle gear oil unless you feel like using what you already have on hand.

For the ATF you can use the D4 if you want as it's rated for Dex/Merc III.

For engine oil there's a TON of debates on what oils to put in the 4.0 (Dino vs synthetic, oil classes 5W-20, 10W-30, 15W-40 etc, and what additives if any to add). I won't recommend engine oil because I'm not starting that whole debate over again. You will find PLENTY to read on the forum about it.

One thing I will recommend is that you use a Wix, Napa Gold (made by wix), mobil 1, mopar or motorcraft filter on the 4.0's. The Frams (also known by some 'cruiser' as the OCOD, orange can of death ) are very poorly designed and can cause considerable engine damage.

Oh as to the trailer hitch. Go to your local junkyard with a breaker bar and pull one off. I have gotten 3 XJ hitches that way and have paid less that $20 for each of em.

Make sure to pick up a set of "nutstrips" to slide into the frame rail so that your hitch installation is as strong as it can be.

Nutstrips can be found from morris4x4 and JCR along with your dealer.
