With XJ's, when your in 2wd the front axle and DS still spin, so there wont be much of a difference in mpg.

although your not suppose to drive in 4x4 on normal roads, unless you have full time 4x4, cause it will tear up your t-case

Two questions

1. What transfer case do you have
2. Why do you want to be in 4 wheel on normal roads?

I agree 100% with "TheJerm" your not supposed to drive on the hard pavement with a "Part Time" (NP231) T-case...Tj

You have the NP242. You "could" run full time 4wd on the road if you wanted without harming anything (theoretically). I wouldn't unless you really feel you need too.

You have a 242, you can use the full time setting on the road, although it is not recommended. It can damage the transfer case internals. If you do feel compelled to use it, only use it in slick or bad weather conditions.

A BIG thank you

Again many thanks for all your advice.

I have been reading other posts/threads and you all seem very knowledgable. I hope even I can be of use in the future.
