I have been wanting to trim for a while now, but I am hesitant to do so...

If I were to cut and fold the rears, I thought about the tires being sliced. Could this happen?

And can I just cut the tabs off after I slice them, or I cant because of the spot welds?...

Sorry if its a dumb question, but your help is appreciated...

If hammer those folds up, chances are your leafs won't even contact them. Cut them high and hammer them higher.

 

most people run some type of sealent over the metal like expoxy of some sort. also your paint will chip so have touch up ready. and dont cut off the spot welds justcut and fold. I would do this but im too much of a pansy. HTH

...the whole idea of the sharp tabs in my fender freaks me out if they were to slice my tire...

 

well if you cut the spot welds your outer fender and trunk pan will come apart causeing mud to fly inside lol if you fold them over right it shouldn't be sharp and when u flex ur tire does it rub then inside on the well right now?

 

use this stuff called protecto trim, sold by dpg offroad i think. just smooth out the rear, like was said, the paint will chip and rust slightly so you will need to touch it up. most people have trouble with front tires rubbing, and not as much with back tires. something about cutting past the seam or pinch weld in the back throws everything off and your jeep will fall apart from what i've heard.

 

I doubt you would even come close to touching them. With a cut and fold, bumpstops,and the right offset wheel. Do not cut off spotwelds. Yes it will allow the elements to get in to your rig, but also remember its a unibody. They tie your outer skin to inner interior creating a support system for your chassis. Its a no no!

 

When i cut my rears i folded the tabs back put some silicone up there then got some rubber and put it over the fold so i didnt have to worry about my tires the rubber is about 3/4" high it has a split down the middle so it slides right on puut some silicone to glue it on then paint it you can get the rubber at home depto or lowes hope this helps

You will not have any issues with tires being sliced up if you have your rear axle bumpstopped properly. Halt the uptravel like 1/2" before the tire contacts the fender. Most tire setups have the tire flexing INTO the fender, not touching the outer part where you cut. That of course depends on your backspacing.

 

Don't be scared to do it. You gotta start somewhere with cutting and trimming. It's not really easy to mess up. I did mine with an angle grinder, just be careful and don't cut too far up when you do the vertical cuts.

 

I was surprised how easy it was, and I have never done anything of the sorts. Only took me 45 mins to do the rear and it turns out nice. I was skeptical about how it would look but I am really impressed. The front took me about 45 mins a side, but I did it with aviation snippers. Again it is very easy and the results are very impressive.

 

no sharp edges to cut your tire on here. took me about 30 minutes to get it to look like that

-and since that pic i have moved the axle back one inch so it doesnt look so goofy

 

How did you move it back one inch? Why was it so far foward?

 

i guess when i added my shackle (1.5" of lift) it pushed it forwards. I have UBEs that have three different centering pin holes, so i could move it forwards or backwards 1".
