Help - U Joints
Time for new front axle U Joints on my 1989 Jeep Cherokee Limited, 2 door, 4 Litre, inline 6. Didn't get great results out of the last set - maybe 8 years but not a lot of miles in those years (even thought they were lubed regularly - Moog (I think but honestly can't remember). I'd like to go back to OEM Spicer type which I believe are non-greasable.
Getting some confusing information on various websites which say to use a Spicer 760 - which seems to come up as:5-760x. While listed as fitting 84 to 01 Cherokee, when I put in my 89 it says 'not compatible. Not sure what gives. Interested in any suggestions or opinions on alternatives. |
There are two different sizes of u-joints used in the older XJs.
The non-ABS ones use the smaller Spicer 5-260X replacing Mopar J812-6637 and the ABS Jeeps use the larger 5-760X replacing Mopar J812-6638. https://www.northerndrivetrain.com/p...PI-5-260X.html https://www.northerndrivetrain.com/p...PI-5-760X.html |
Bwana nailed it. Ran into that issue myself recently.
I'd be happy with 8 years out of a set of universals. Greasable or not. It ain't a fun job but if you have the right joints and tools it ain't too bad. |
