help!!! turbo whistle/whine
hi guys,
i've not long brought a 1999 2.5 turbo diesel xj cherokee sport. since i've had it, it's had a high pitched whistle/whine turbo noise coming from the engine. when it's driving it comes in about 2000rpm and stays through the rest of the rev range, the noise shuts up when foot is taken off accelerator.
it is really noticable, although i don't seem to lose any power. you can still feel the turbo kicking in. so it seems to be working really well, but why the high pitched whistle/whine? is this normal?
when i brought it they told me that they had just had the turbo cleaned through. i've never owned one before, nor heard of this, but i didn't question it. going through the paper work i have nothing saying this has been done. so wondering if something is seriously wrong, and they lied to me.
i'd really appreciate the help, cheers guys

The hardest thing to diagnose over the Internet is sounds. I know the 2006 Liberty CRD that we owned you could definately hear the turbo as it came to life, and it was completely normal. Now if it's the same sound you're hearing or not I have no idea, it's normal for a turbo to make a "turbo noise" if you get my drift.

If you are not familiar with turbochargers, take a look on howstuffworks.com. Search on there about turbos so you better understand why you hear this sound.
Trust me, hearing this spool is a good thing. Many people love it, many more people desire it.

Never did a 4.0 TD.
The 2.5 TD was introduced, here in the UK, because of our high gas prices. (its currently the equivilent of around $12 a gallon )
The engine itself is an Italian unit, made by "VM". It was originaly a marine engine. They suffer quite badly from warped heads and blown head gaskets due to major cooling issues (they were originaly designed to be run, submerged in a water jacket).
Yes, they all came with 4x4 and a 231 T/C as standard.
TD XJ's were availiable in the UK, Europe and Australia.
