I’m thinking about buying a 2001 xj with 170,000 miles
guy said all is well only thing is that the check engine light is on because of an “evap code” and that he hasn’t fixed it because the car is running just fine
Should i go ahead and buy it?
is it an easy fix?
car is is very clean leather no rust

You need to look at it more in depth....2001 had a casting flaw in the head. The head is prone to cracking and causing all sorts of trouble. Ask if it has a history of over heading. Check out the coolant, get the jeep up to operating temp and look for signs. These heads can crack at any time so it's good to be thorough and know what you could be dealing with. Have you actually seen the jeep yet? Look it over real good and don't just take the sellers word for everything.

Aside from that issue, you might want to search the board for info on the head cracking problem that s common on 2000 and 2001 XJs. (Martlor13 beat me to it!)

For out in my area, if it is truely clean and rust free, that is a good price. Out in your area, not too sure if that is normal pricing for your area or not. Im sure a few locals will pop in to add an opinion or two.

Ya its worth trying to fix. Again if its rust free, in your area that should be like gold. The evap system is not that complicated and there is a good chance its just a busted hose. But like others have said, the 2000-2001 have their own problems so its something you have to keep in mind.
