got a 87 xj installed a new fuel pump. kicks on can hear prime before start, but once you turn over it never starts and when i disco'ed the fuel line going into the fuel rail i have no fuel coming out of it. have switched wires...there are three wires goin to pump. one is short goes from bolt on bracket pump sits in the pump(had that one on - side and one going to a small sensor(never unpluged it and one long one that goes from outside to the pump. hooked like this when i turned on you couldnt hear the pump cut on and had wires beside starting selenoid getting hot and smoking as well as the wires going to pump. never started. worked fine before swaping in new pump. so i switched the "ground wire and"power on pump and now you can hear it kick on and the wires up front dont get hot....????? im wondering if it could be working in reverse now? maybe the pump is defective?

 

the whole switching the wires thing bothers me because its only logical that the short wire is my ground, and long one coming from harness is power and the pump works now>? or makes noise at least...the other way (the one that made sense) made wires under hood get hot and smoke by selenoid and couldnt hear pump cut on.

 

the short wire bolted to bracket fuel pump sits in goes 3 inche to top of pump i would think this is my ground but the the pump works (hums) with this one on the power side and the loger wire from outside the tank on the - side of pump. how the **** is that? im about to sell the hell outa the jeep. cant make my trip to uwharrie because of this confusing

 

yeah mines weirded out too... if i turn the key to the ON position the pump doesnt come on... but my jeep still start (alittle slow) and while its running it hummmmssss away? weird... from what i hear the fuel pumps are hell in just about all the jeeps

 

yea,,well i still need to figure this crap out.

 

if you got a cheap pump there is a good chance its defective. i went through a few under warranty in a couple days time before i wanted my money back and bought a bosch unit
