Default Help me diagnose this problem

hey guys, for the last few months I've had a weird symptom with my 2000 Cherokee 4.0 4x4. Randomly out of no where, I'll be stopped at a stop light and then when I go to accelerate my jeep sounds like it's going but it hesitates for about 5-8 seconds and will hardly move at all, almost like it's stuck, and then if I let up on the gas and press down to try again it'll go away and start accelerating normal . It feels & sounds almost exactly as what happens when your tires spin if you're stuck in the snow or ice and can't get traction to move. Except this was on normal pavement. This will randomly happen once a month or so out of no where. The rest of the time it's totally fine. Any ideas as to what this hesitation is? Thanks
