help find production #'s for my 88 xj 2dr lim
I'm trying to find out how many 2door limited xj's Dodge produced in 1988. I get people offering to buy my 1988 2door cherokee limited all the time. I'm starting to think I might have a rare Jeep Cherokee on my hands. I found this xj on a friends property rotting away so I asked him about it and he told me to take it away free of charge. Even had a clear title. The body was in bad shape, smashed windshield, no water pump, and the drivers side door had been ripped off and lag bolted back on. It needed alot of work, but because it started up after i put a water pump on it, I thought what the hell, I need a project and it would a nice vehicle fixed up so I took it away and put it in my garage. The trany was shot so I had to replace it, and then the transfer case threw something out the side of the case so now I have to replace that. It's going to be new by the time i'm done. Still needs paint, but compared to how bad it was when I got it's come along way. When I'm done I'll have about $1,200 into it to make it a stock xj. I don't know much about them except how to fix it so any info would be cool.

I found that (187, 136) XJs were built in 1988. Not sure about just numbers of your 2 door Limited.

Dodge didn't produce any Cherokees in the 1988 model year....
In fact Dodge never produced a single Jeep....
Chrysler operated Jeep as a seperate division since its purchase in Aug of 1987.
The problem with trying to determine an accurate number of any model made, Jeep allowed any buyer to add any optional package to their Cherokee while ordering.
An example: From the VIN, my 88 Comanche shows as a base model. But I have a Metric Tonne, with the sport gauge cluster, the off-road package and the 7 inch wide wheels.

no, I'm saying that you cannot tell production numbers by vin on our vehicles, and he's not going to be able to find them out from chrysler either.
chrysler tossed all amc's records, or hid them so well that no one knows where they are.
we can tell you approximate cherokee production numbers for that year, as has been stated earlier, but there is no way to differ a 2dr from a 4dr in those numbers, so far as I'm aware.

What people fail to remember is that AMC ran Jeep VERY differently than people expect from car companies today. Yes, Jeep had standard models of Jeeps. BUT... they were by FAR the most open with their equipment and custom ordering processes....
