newbie with questions: 98 Cherokee
Hey guys, just got a 98 Cherokee for my daughters first car and it has a few issues to work out. Overall its a great little jeep. I don't have an owners manual for it.
1: What is the jeep display near the center console for? It has two green lights that are iluminated.
2: I can't seem to find the dang fuse panel! Where is it?
3: Cruising down the road, I hear a whining sound coming from the rear end when I let off the gas. I plan to do a diff flush this week, will this help?
I'm sure I will have many more questions but I dont want to flood you guys yet. Thanks and its a pleasure to become a part of this forum.

There are 2 fuse panels, one is under the hood by the battery and the other one is behind the passenger side kick panel. They should have diagrams on the panels you remove on the backside. Are you talking about the switches below the heater controls? If that is what you are talking about they are for your rear wiper, fog lamps, and rear defrost.

The over head display can tell temp direction and mpg's, Fuses just pick up a hayns manual you will need it at some point any way, The noise in the rear good luck with that hopefully just low on fluid if not they are $100 at a JY. Just make sure if you need a replacement to get a 8.25 and not a D35

The fuse panel diagram is in the owners manual. Check ebay. I was able to find an owners manual for my '98 pretty cheap, and it would answer all your questions (except the whining noise).

Just curious about the noise in rear. Are the tire all the same size? A family member purchased a jeep with a loud noise and I found that the front and rear tires were 1 size off. Changed tires and fixed the problem.

Take a picture of the panel and post it. If its a picture of the Jeep it shows open doors and state of 4WD. The 2 rear wheels should be lit in 2wd.

Factory service manual
Factory service manuals are an invaluable tool for the do it your selfer. if you are a licensed jetmech you obviously know how to read a manual. They are especially useful for chasing down wiring issues. The Chilton's/Haynes may or may not help as they cover a number of years whereas the FSM covers one year.

You guys are great. Yes the center display changed as I tried the 4wd so I figured that one out. I found the horn relay and fuse and it clicks when I push the button, so now I need to find the horn itself to see if its working.
Today, I changed the front brakes, front shocks, and drivers side axle.
As for the rear end whine, 3 tires are 225/75/15 and the left front tire is a 235/75/15. I'm going to clean and fill the rear diff tomorrow.
Also, theres a pretty bad vibration at 70mph. Not sure what thats all about. Seems like its coming from the rear also.
