Default Helicoil Issue....??

I'm trying to repair the stripped threads for a caliper bolt with a helicoil. Drilled it out to the correct size and the helicoil tap won't bite to start to cut the threads. Any ideas???........

Just got to make sure... your tap was marked STI for "screw thread insert" correct?

You might want to let us know the drill size, tap size and helicoil size so we can help you cross reference.

drilled 21/64"
Marked STI
8 x 1.25
tap 570-8
Made in China

It appears that the first couple of threads in the tap have folded over, like the tap was softer than the knuckle....if that makes sense...

Can we see a picture of the tap?

5/16-24 is the STI tap size for a 21/64 hole. Can you get your hands on that?

Although... it should work for your M8 as well.

It makes no sense that it should be folded over...

I'm going to try and fit a bolt with a nut for the time being. Not much clearance in their. I do want to get a helicoil in there.....

I'm wondering if the tap is defective, in the sense that it might not be hardened right...

That looks like a POS tap. I've never seen that...yes they can break, (mis-used), but never seen that. You might be headed to the hardware store.
