Default Drill a hole in 2001 XJ Key?

I've been searching and it seems my 2001 XJ might have electronics in the key. Sure doesn't look that way to me... I need to drill a hole so it will work in a really cool key holder, but don't want to destroy a chip if there is one inside.

Thanks for the advice.

Go have a duplicate made before you drill.

I'm about 85% sure there is. When I got a spare made they told me not to use it to turn it on because it would shut off the engine and just do bad stuff.

You need to calm down, bud. You're still new here. Don't make the entire site look bad.

Yup, jeep won't start without that grey key apparently. But yet, insurance company thinks an alarm is more of a safety device than this key

Is it a black key or a gray key? My 2000 has the black one and it has no transponder. If you want to be sure, go have a cheap copy made with a plain key. If it starts your jeep than feel free to drill away. Mine looks like this

Go to a hardware store and have them make a 2$ key for your truck. Then check if it works with your ignition. If it doesn't work, then your key is chipped.

The votes are in!
You are not wasting our time and you need to buy a spare key to start with unless it is a grey or black key then you can drill it unless it dont start then you need the other key.
What else do we have to do?
