Heat only works on 1 and 4
 
Just got a 2000 Sport 4x4 Sport auto with a 4.0. The heat does work, but the blower only blows on 1 and 4. Theres no in between. When its on 1, its very faint and almost non existent. So I leave it on 4 for a while until I'm warm and then turn it back down. Could it be the blower motor bad or the switch panel going bad? At least it still works right now, its just annoying to have to leave it on blast when I don't need it.

Replacing the blower resistor block may help. Unless, of course, the resistor block connector is toast.

Would that be behind the firewall close to where the heater core is?

No, it's in the passenger footwell, near the bottom of the HVAC Unit. You have to remove the plastic kick panel that's covering it to view/change it.

I can post some pics after I get my photobucket up and running.

Or - just refer to your copy of the 2000 Factory Servce Manual, Section 24.

Yeah I was gonna look in the FSM I have but it's for a 98 though. I'm sure it's the same though. If not much different.

The '98 is close for what you want to do but not for the Blend-Air Door Actuator.

Pacific Coast Manuals.com has pdf FSM's you can buy cheap.

Just changed my blower motor resistor this weekend.... not sure if your '98 is same/similar to my 2000... I removed the glove box which allowed me to see the kick panel and the bolts to remove it.... had to use extensions on the rachet.... then I could see and access the blower motor resistor easily... unplug wiring, remove two bolts... reverse procedure to put new unit in.

Yeah mine is a 2000 also. Is this the same issue or similar to why you replaced it?

Well yes with a qualifier.... my blower went from working fine to suddenly only working on high...#4 setting. It still heated but it had to either be full blast and loud or off with just ambient heat. Read up and found the blower motor resistor to be the most likely cause. Not sure if the blower working on 1 and 4 only is the same....

Seems to pretty common on most xjs, what I did to fix mine is simply wiggle the resister a little but and voila I was toasty with all 4 settings

Were you able to get your photobucket working? I'm looking at the resistors now and I see a couple different ones but they both say they are for a 2000 XJ. I haven't had a chance to tear it apart to take a look at it yet.

Here's a pic of what you'll see once you remove the kick cover.

The Blower Resistor Block is that somewhat diamond shaped, white, device held on with two screws.

Refer to your FSM for procedures on how to R&R the kick cover and Blower Resistor Block. Section 24.

Ok thanks. That's the one I figured it'd be. Some of the others that said they'd fit look nothing like that.

The OEM part number is 4864957. Same part number for 1997 - 2001 XJ.

Rockauto has them, so would other local auto parts stores.

Got one from my local Advance Auto for about $45 and put it in last night. Everything works fine now. The old one was pretty dirty. I don't think dirt affects resistors really, it was just probably pretty worn out. Thanks guys!
