Headliner restoration help.
I知 going to be picking up a new headliner this weekend. I知 just curious how many yards of material does it take to cover the headliner. And should I add new foam along with a fabric?

Headliner material has the foam backing to the cotton. I went to joann too so i know they have it. May not have your color but i chose black anyway. Youll need 3 yards. I just completed mine and used 2 cans of 3m 77.
There was enough material left over to do both visors as well. Good luck.

I think it will be a bit more tricky to get the second layer to lay "smoothly" over the foam backing but I've never tried that before. Just don't use too much glue or it may seep through the top layer, and try to get the bottom layer as smooth as possible because the foam helps hide any imperfections.
Other than that, give it a shot! Always fun to add some flair if you plan on keeping your Jeep for a while

you mean for the fiberglass headliner board? $40 for that isn't too bad unless you are going to a junkyard and pulling it yourself

I wouldnt use the 77 spray tho. I've too many tales of it peeling loose on a hot day.
Instead, use the 3m 90. Or spray on contact adhesive.
Also, one of the secrets to using that kind of spray on glue is to spray both sides.. then let them tack up first. It'll never work if you try to press them together while the glue is still wet.

I just redid the headliner in my 98 this past weekend. I bought 3 yards and it was plenty enough. There is enough left over for the visors if I want to go that far. I used DAP Weldwood Landau contact cement and it worked great. I read a lot of threads and there were a lot of threads where 3M 77 was used and they did not end well and sagged very quickly. 3M 90 seems to be a better option. The Weldwood is ~$40 and is only available in a gallon can. You would also need a compressor and sprayer. I went that way because I also have a 99 that I need to do the same job.
Overall, it's not a real hard project. Make sure you scrape all the old nasty foam off of the fiberglass liner. I used one of these brushes from homedepot and it worked great: https://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-4-Ro...-HDX/206509451
If your fiberglass liner has not been molested, you shouldn't really need a replacement. $40 for one isn't a bad price IMHO. Here is recent thread discussing the adhesive used: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/hea...hesive-244081/

You got that right. This is probably the most common mistake people make. And then they complain about a lousy product!

use a dust mask when you remove the old glue i did this without and had a strange taste in my mouth for almost a week, 3 yard is more than enough, the visors are a bit more work but very nice once all its done.

Best way to remove the old foam is with a shop vac and a brush attachment. Use a filter later bag in the vacuum. It really cleans it up nice and mess free. You could even use just the hose without the brush initially and then use the brush to get in all the hooks and crannies.

I redid mine a the week before last. Mine had 20+ thumb tacks holding it up. Clean the fiberglass panel really good. I went as far as to go over the panel with adhesive remover then denatured alcohol. Just make sure you clean it well.
The brush I used was trash after I was done. all the foam balled up and stuck to it. If the foam strips on the top side of the panel are deteriorating as well. They will leave a fun mess behind.
My sun visors are in good shape and didn't need to be recovered. The center console could use it. However, I wasn't in the mood to mess with that yet.
