I have a 96 and my headlights would shut off driving down the road, but all the running lights and everything would still be on. (So I was talking to my dad and he had a old Pontiac with a pull switch for the light and he said some time if you pull hard on it the lights would come on.) so I tried and an they came on. Lol so I need a new switch
But it sound like your having a different problem

do you have the auto lights that stay on for 10-15 sec after you shut the car off? if so, i had the same problem, my lights would stay on, i just pulled the relay that controls this function. it is under the dash right next to the windshield wiper relay box

mine used to only come on with the switch and go off as soon as i hit the switch. now as soon as the battery is connected all exterior lights come on except reverse lights. if i plug in the headlight fuse under the dash with the battery connected i get a spark and some weird noise.

been playing around with it and its just the front and rear turn signals and headlights that stay on. the headlight fuse gets really hot fast

You have a shorted wire or ground. That fuse should probably blow - make sure it's the right fuse, otherwise you could wind up having a fire or frying your electrical system.
