head gasket questions.
Getting ready to tackle the head gasket issue getting water in oil pretty bad. its a 94 4.0 245,000 questions are what else should i be checking with the head off. feel pretty comfortable about tackling it but when it comes to engine internals not really familiar that far into them as far as what to check, valves ect. Don't have the money to rebuild or dump a crate motor in it. obviously ill check for cracks in the head but what else should be done while in there.
Thanks in advance

While it's off send it to a machine shop and have them clean the head and replace the valve stem seals..
You can vacuume out the block once the heads off too.

While you have tge head off, go ahead and hone the cylinder walls then take a vac and suck all the oil and crap in the cylinders. Honing the cylinder walls will allow the pistons to move a little easier, makes scratches on cylinder walls that oil clings to.
Also take some break cleaner and clean oil the "gasket cover" ( i may be right on that term)
When you go to re-install the head, torque the head down on the block correctly, with a torque wrench. You can look up the pattern online.
I like what zombie said, but i replaced my head with a rebuilt one for about 200 or 300 bucks, looked like new. Reason being, i was having overheating problems, it was cheaper than taking the existing head to a shop for them to see if it was warped or not.
The iron engine block in the renix jeeps are tough to warp, although the aluminum heads are a different story....
