Default Hard Starting After Short Trip

89 XJ After a short trip of say 1-4 miles or so, the truck starts real hard. I crank the engine over and it tries to start and after about ten seconds of cranking it fire up and runs normally. I tried sitting and idling for 20 minutes after a 4 mile drive hoping that would change the situation but made no difference at all. With a trip of 6 miles or longer and the truck starts in 4-5 seconds w/o and hesitation.

This is my daily driver and have no other car as a backup. I have done no work that I can blame this on. The truck has been pretty reliable since I bought it about 22 months ago.

I have followed "Cruiser's" Renix suggestions, refreshing all the grounds and much of the other guidelines he suggests.

I'm wondering if your injectors are leaking.

The 746 Volvo injectors are a noticeable improvement.

What are some other symptoms of leaky injectors? And how can I test, please?

Thanks. I found and read part of a thread on this board about those injectors. Maybe I'll try some later when I get a couple more paychecks.

FWIW, Last fill-up I got 17.45mpg hiway/town driving, sometimes I get 18.5, sometimes 16.5. I was getting 19-20 when the T-converter lockup worked, but thats another story.

Check your fuel pressure at the rail. Hook up the fuel pressure gauge to the Shrader valve on the rail. Turn the key to run with out starting it, see how long the pressure stays up. If it drains within a few minutes, it could either be the fuel pressure regulator, or the injectors.
