Does anyone know what length bolts are needed to mount the 4.0l to the 1000lb engine stand (69886)?


I have the sizes needed as the top two are 3/8, the bottom two are m10.

Measure and go buy the bolts. Not that hard.

I've never had a 4.0 out myself, but on my classic Mustangs when using my stand for the first time, I measured the backing plate thickness first. Then when the engine was out and suspended from the hoist, I took an inside measurement from the end of the block all the way into the bolt hole until it bottomed out. I then added the two measurements together, subtracted 1/4", and went and bought the appropriate bolts, along with a stack of big washers for spacers if needed.

I didn't want the bolts to end up too short with only a few threads holding. Too long, and they bottom out before clamping the block to the plate.

Incidentally, I put the plate on while the engine was still in the air. Then I put engine and plate on the stand while the engine was still on the hoist, then lowered the whole assembly to the ground. Gently.

That's how I hook up an engine from a hoist to a stand as well. Can't help you with the size bolts but if they are too long you can stack a couple large washers on the back of the plate.

New to this as well, luckily I have a couple guys helping that have experience with this sort of thing.


I grabbed a couple lengths and washers' hopefully one of them will do the trick. Either way I'll post back with info just in case someone else rebuilding a 2000+ needs it

3" bolts and several washers did the trick.

How well does the harbor freight engine stand hold up to the 4.0

Pretty good. I have the 750 lbs capacity model. I have heard horror stories about not being able to rotate the engine, so I slathered the two areas in marine grade grease.

The Harbor Freight engine stand will easily hold a Buick 455 V8 iron motor:brows:......the Jeep 4.0 should be no problem.

I've used both the 750 and the 1000lbs one both work good. I actually have a 4.0 that been sitting for the almost a year waiting to be rebuilt. The 1000 makes rolling around a lot easier. The only really down side in have found it when turning the motor over can be a pain even when it's centered.

You need two 7/16-14 bolts 2-1/2 inches long for the top bolts. AND:
You need two 7/16-14 bolts 3-1/2 inches long for the bottom bolts. AND:
You need four 7/16 washers

Get the 1000 lb stand it is only a little more $$ but well worth it.

I haven't attempted to rotate the motor but the stand is holding fine. Moving it around while mounted takes some caution but is relatively easy. As stated above spend the extra 30 bucks and get the 1000lb.
