Default Guage cluster problems

On my 97 sometimes when you first start it the gauges won't work but if I beat on the dash they start working it sometimes does this when I am driving and it has been getting worse. I am pretty sure that this is a common issue because I know another guy that had the same issues with his xj. Is it the gauge cluster itself going bad or a loose connection somewhere? Basicly I need to know what to look for when I pull the cluster out to fix it. Also will a gauge cluster from a 2000 model work in a 97?

Sounds coincidental haha. Sounds like something is loose. When you hit it it probably gets contact better and then when you are driving, the vibrations probably shake it loose again. As far as the gauge cluster from 00 to 97, I would think they would be interchangeable.
