Well with my cherokee anytime you shift it from 1 to 2 or 2 to 3 it grinds, and if you down shift from any gear it grinds. My dad says its the syncros in the tranny. Or is it something else? thanks

i would throw our the BA-10 or the AX-5 and throw in an AX-15. That tranny is more reliable. it does take some work to make it fit, but not a WHOLE lot of work

Alright thats a thought but cost wise how much would that be? im on a very tight budjet. would it be cheaper to rebuild? buy another 5 speed? or just go lame and throw in a auto?

go to the salvage yard. find a cherokee with an ax-15, buy it, find the write up on how to adapt it on this site or google. and start saving pennys for what you need.

and best of luck!

btw it can be done at home. a shop will charge you 400 just to crack the current case. and not even do anything

Alright then, looks like when i hit the junkyard for a 4.0 for the hornet i wll need to look out for the tranny. Is their a way to tell them apart? I found some info on them, but it just says that they look the same Also how long will this tranny last with it grinding the way it does? and if i put a clutch in it would it help out at all?

look for a tranny from a 93 and older. plain and simple The only difference between the ax-5 and the ax-15 is the extra ribbing on it, other than that identical. Other than the ax-5 is light duty and the ax-15 is medium-moderatly heavy duty. look on advanced adapters for the other vehicles they can be found in!!! i know you can get it out of a dodge, but you have to use the jeep bell housing.

like i said there are writes up

and the clutch wont do anything if it is not clutch related.....

meaning if it is only doing it in those gears and not the others its not clutch related....

so dont waste your money on a clutch for the POS tranny that came with the 88's

sorry if i am to blunt. Just trying not to BS with you and help you out the best i can

And thanks for being up front about it, i would much rather have someone be like that instead of someone not telling me fully and end up with problems
