Grinding (starter?) in Park and Neutral

Grinding (starter?) in Park and Neutral
I got pretty stuck yesterday in a hole, with quite a bit of water in the cab. I got it out in 1 1/2 hours, drive around some more, then drive about 80 miles home with no problems.
This morning I took out the seats, console, and carpet. I started it, and there is a super loud grinding sound. It sounds like it could be the starter, not sure. The key starts it in the On position, instead of Start.
I don't know if I knocked something out while removing the console, or its related to the water. Any ideas where to begin?
