Grinding/scratching noise
A little while ago when doing some work on my 96 xj I went to move it around in the driveway and when taking it out of park it made a very weird grinding noise when in drive and reverse. So I parked in neutral and shut it off then started it again and it didn’t make the sound. I asked the mechanic who serviced the transmission about a week before and he said he had heard it when he had it but then it went away so he couldn’t diagnose it. Someone said possibly a bad starter but idk why that would happen only in drive and reverse. I’m wondering if any one else has experienced this and hopefully knows what it is. Also this hasn’t happened since and it was about 3ish months ago.

If it was me I would drop pan and look for excess metal shavings first. You sure it is trans ? take off inspection cover and get a visual on flywheel/torque converter area, loose bolts or cracks in plate. The old mechanics stethoscope will help pin point sound for a better diagnosis.

No I’m not certain it’s the trans. Sounds kinda like flywheel but like I said has only happened twice and not in a while.

The ol intermittent problems suck for sure. Burned a few(5) chevy auto trannies in my younger days, had some make horrible grinding sounds to go away before they failed completely. That said the AW4 is a great design, have to really abuse it to fail. Visual inspection is where your at this point. Flywheel cracks can be tough to see, should get some noise in idle when cracks get big enough.
Just a thought, motor mounts bad? fan rubbing shroud ? Would'nt hurt to check bolts on starter, things happen ?

Thank you. I’ll check those

Is it immediately following you starting the vehicle? That would be the only time I would think starter.... if so. you could test the solenoid to see if maybe it's not disengaging correctly. that would make a pretty nasty sound.
Otherewise, like others have suggested... start systematically testing and ruling things in/out.
