Default grinding gears

My buddy has a 97 xj with a 4.0, 5 speed, and a 8.25 rear end. 1st and 2nd gear are fine but when up shifting the gears grind into 3rd and 4th but not 5th. But when down shifting is fine, and gears don't grind. Any ideas? I think synchros might be bad? If so how difficult is it to re-build the trany? Or could we just replace the synchros?

I swapped my AX5 to another AX5 because I had similar grinding/hard shifting as your friend. 2nd, which was actually the third trans in my MJ, had the same condition. I then decided to install a Hurst/Core short throw shifter........

For better than a year now my AX5 shifs smooth as silk.

I believe is also has to do with the oil I'm using.....but that is another matter.

YMMV
