Default Gradual loss of power over 1 mile - then death??

Well, it was a morning like any other, heading to work in the 92 XJ.

Got out of the driveway and she started to sputter a bit (not too unusual, felt like a fouled plug).

Then over the course of a 1/2 mile, things got progressively and steadily worse - felt like 2 then 3 then 4 fouled plugs.

Turned around to head back home but didn't make it back. Over the last couple hundred yards she was just barely moving, all I could do was hold partial throttle to try to keep her alive.

She finally died out and wouldn't start.

Almost seems like sugar in the tank, gradually clogging the injectors? Fuel pump 'sounds normal'. Wiggled the plug wires, checked coolant ok, etc. Kinda stumped on this one... A friend suggested the coil could have melted a slow death?

Cranks over with just a quiet sputter every few revs.

92 XJ stock 4.0, auto, no cat, 230kmi

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

fuel, air, spark

One of those is your problem. I would start by checking that you have fuel pressure. Then check to make sure you have strong spark from the coil.

I dont mean to be the bearer of bad news.. But i had that exact thing happen to me.. I was driving home from school.. it seemed a tad sluggish. It then got progressively worse. Till i came to a complete death a few miles down the road. I found out i had no Cylinder pressure. My piston rings were shot. Check your cylinder pressure. Its the same story i had..

Once the vehicle has cooled off, does it start again and then die again a mile or two down the road?

how old is your cat convertor?

Sound like a fuel problem, check the fuel pressure.

Thanks for the input guys, and more is welcome. No cat in the exhaust - Just header/glasspack/turbo muffler/tailpipe.

I will first check:
-cold re-start ability
-compression check
-fuel filter
-fuel pressure

I can't imaging all of my rings went bad in a 1/2 miles, but compression check should verify that. Still have the numbers from a couple years ago to compare to.

I have been working on all kinds of cars for 20 years, including building and setting up a MegaSquirt EFI in another car. I guess my aim is to get Jeep 4.0 specific information here.

Thanks again!

Default Problem Solved! - Which leads me to my next question...

Fuel gauge or sender....

Thanks for the help guys, I've run low on gas before, but it always did hard sputters, not this slow loss of power...

The gauge is off by about a 1/4 tank...
