Got sold the wrong engine
Hey Im new to Jeeps and think I have made a rookie mistake.
I bought a 1997 Cherokee that had been driven until it overheated, and then the driving continued until the thing stopped. Theres all the signs of head damage as the water in the radiator is gone and the resivoir is full of foam. I figured easiest thing to do would be to replace the engine and avoid any problems with stuffed internals, so I picked up a second hand engine cheap. Ive got the engine home and realised it has yellow injectors and a different throttle body, so Im guessing this might mean Ive bought a non HO engine for my Cherokee which currently has a HO engine in it. What can I do if this is infact the wrong engine? am I best to get rid of this engine and buy a high output one or do I throw this one in and change some parts over? Will the exhaust mani off the HO bolt up to the non-HO? Do I just convert to non- HO? This car wont be a modified beast, I just want to get it up and running |
What is the casting number on the head next to the 4th head bolt on the drivers side?
|
yea pull some numbers to identify what it is, those are the yellow stick style injectors #19 most likely, which is a common upgrade for someone to do on a 4.0. and the throttlebody might be a 62mm one or something, no telling what previous owner could have done to the engine.

405MX02 is whats written on the block, the difference in the throttle body is that there is an extra sensor on the front of it, other than that they are identical.
|
At the top of the head outside of the valve cover it should have a casting number like 7120,does it?
|
Sorry just realised my drives side will be different to your guys
Number on the head is 7120, I guess this means it is the HO? what could the deal be with the missing sensor on the throttle body? |
That is an ho motor from 91-95,at least the head is. the block should have 53008405 on it.
|
Can I just swap the throttle body? will I run into any other issues swapping between a 95 and a 97?
Cheers for you quick repsonses guys, much appreciated |
You can swap the entire intake would be best, that way it is as close to normal as possible, electrical stays the same also, but changing the throttle body should work also.
