Got a nutty vibration.....help???
OK...so I've taken the plunge and I've got a Cherokee.....haven't owned it long enuff to call it an XJ....that day will come....(danged newbies!!!)
Anyhoo...it's got an odd vibration that I can't diagnose...but I'd like to share my symptoms with y'all un-newbies....and maybe somebody's been here before. It's a deep vibration....not in the front end, only happens between 30-37 mph....any gear...if I'm bein gentle or standing on it in passing gear...same quirky vibration....same speed... My front end is kinda loose and sloppy...I've already noticed this...driving, and by the evidence of the cupping on the front tires...but like I said....my BIG issue is somewhere further back...... Seein as I have no desire to strap a board underneath crawl onto it...and have my dearly beloved cart me around town so I can observe from a different point of view....I'm hopin some of y'all have been-there-dun-that, and can steer me in the right direction for a cure. Thanx in advance  Scott |
This could be so many different things. I would take care of your front end first since you say it is sloppy. Any time you get an alignment they will usually suggest problems found with track bar and other steering components.
My XJ had vibes when i got it. I replaced the motor mounts and tranny mount on mine to cure it but not sure if yours is this since mine vibed at slow speeds also. Check your Driveshaft u- joints and lube them up good since you are relying on the PO to have done that lol. There is so much that it could be you just have to take is slow and check it out. |
YI'd check TRE's for excess play as well as the track bar..Also jack it up and make sure it's secure and then grab those tires and try and move them, if you can move em up and down and such could be bad ball joints, wheel bearing/hub asseblies or axle ujoints. just some areas to check ontop of what stryker said..Also if you plan to do a lift replace the driveshaft u-joints..lifts will exagerate a bad u-joint.

OH..............DUH, 1 more thing
Has a 2" lift....coil spacer in front....and add-a-leaf in the rear...could my driveshaft angles be off canter?? creating this freaky #!*%....?
This probably ads more variables to the cure:dunno: Scott |
Yeah could be the driveline angles for sure.. news XJ's like yours tend to have more issues with that once lifted..

I didnt realize you had a lift. I would defintly look at Pinion angels then. NP231 are prown to giving drive line vibes with any sort of lift on them.
