Now to get these installed.

Just three screws, right?

Correct, pry off plastic cover on inside of door to expose the three torx screws.

Sometimes it's best to remove the door panels so they don't get boogered up removing and replacing the screws.

Thanks for the tips. Here's another project that could have cost even more money.
Three screws right. There is some wiring to be considered, so removing the door panels was a requirement. Once off the door/window switch cable was also the trunk for the mirror connector branch.

I kept the harness end with connector from the old mirror, to solder onto the new. A few waterproof heatshrink connectors and the job was finished in a short time. I match/connected the wire colors together from both harness ends. This isn't the correct adjustment direction at the mirror as controlled by the console switch, but it works and the mirrors don't need much adjusting anyhows.

Of course removing the door panels exposed the condition of the door speakers. Those needed replacing. Another trip to the store for speakers and shrink tube. But if I'm spending the time/money for front speakers might as well replace the rears too.

When comparing the newer vs original mirrors many improvements are obvious. Side vision is dramatically improved as the mirror surface in much wider and the unit is higher and further away from the door. These later units also fold into the door. Plus the 92 mirrors have to be a coupla pounds heaver than the 97s.

Finishing up Its time to clean the windows and mirrors. Damn, outta 'Invisible Glass" another trip to the store......

One small caveat was discovering the little clips for the master window control stuck on the door speaker magnet. I was wondering how to secure that switch.

Correct, the 97+ power mirror wires, do not match the 96-. I switched them until correct. And also found one of those clips on a speaker magnet.

Maybe not for books on audio, but for music the speaker bar is a necessity. On early models, speakers can be moved from hatch to an overhead bar.

I parted out a 99 with power mirrors.

My 88 had no power mirrors. So, I just installed the 99 power mirrors without the wires and we adjust them by hand......

The overhead sound-bar is stock on some 1996 and earlier XJ's. 97+ incorporated speakers into headliner.
There are also dash speakers on some XJ's.

Soundbar is a good place to put in Midbass drivers. They dont need the space like a sub but still add some low end.
