Default Goodies behind bumper.

Yesterday night I pulled off the bumper on my 99 xj, as I am making a custom one. Behind the bumper was a large black spherical canister I figured was important to the vac. system. Other than that there is what appears to be a sensor with nothing plugged into it. I would assume it's airbag related but would like to know what exactly it is and why I don't have an idiot light going off at the cluster. Thanks.

Yes that was the vacuum canister.

Pics of this plug? It's hard to tell from a description.

I don't think XJs have air bag sensors located in the bumper area.

If thr sensor is located in the center of the bumper. It is more then likely the temp sensor for the ambiant temp. But a pic of the sensor and connecton and the location would help with a possitive I.D.

It's probably for a temp probe for an overhead console temp read out.

Everyone is right, if its popping out the crossmember its the temp sensor. And also correct on the vac ball, you'll either have to remount it in the new bumper or move it in the engine bay. if you just disconnect it, only your defroster vent will work

I will post a picture later when I'm around the vehicle, but an ambient temp sensor makes perfect sense. Thank you for the insight folks.

If you got a cookie for every correct answer you gave, you'd need a serious weight loss program ....
