powertrax

Also, anyone had any experience with this locker? How hard is it to put in yourself? My dad is a mechanic so we do all the work on our jeeps ourselves. which would i be better off with? that one or this one? Any other suggestions would be great as well. Thanks. http://rustysoffroad.com/mm5/merchan...egory_Code=LOC

The Powertrax can be installed with a minimum amount of effort. No need to do anything except remove the guts inside the carrier (assuming you do not have a limited slip).

The TrueTrac will require you to get more in-depth. You would need new ring gear bolts and would have to make a tool to adjust the carrrier backlash (the 8.25 uses outboard adjusters). And a dial indicator to measure the backlash.

If you're trying to keep it simple, the powertrax would be the way to go.

Incidently ... CherokeeForum has some vendors here that can give you some great prices too. And even gave you some free tech.

there are also a lot of guys who like the Aussie Lockers. basically it is the same thing as a LockRite/PowerTrax (Richmond Gear brands), but is much easier on the wallet.

I got my Aussie at northridge4x4. Cheaper than through Aussie. Great locker and easy enough for me to install in a couple hours.

ah, so i take it you have the 27-spline axle then... same as me. kinda annoying when there are always the upgrades for the later model years, but the early years you basically have the over priced versions as your only option.

According to Metlic's profile ... he has a 97 XJ. That will be a 29 spline 8.25 axle

Aussie does not do a 8.25 27 spline. I got a Trac Lock but haven't put it in yet due to the weather but it looks fairly simple to install it...tj
OOPs didnt see he had a 1997

I Installed the PowerTrax No-slip in my 89. I installed it my self. It works really well off road and its not to bad on pavement. You can find it cheaper than $450. I don't remember where I got mine but it was around $400.

yes it is a 29 spline 8.25. The aussie locker seems like a good choice for the money but is it going to eat up my tires? I do alot of road driving and off-road on the weekends (I'm in college). Does the aussie have a little bit of a limited slip? If i installed an aussie locker in the front axle wouldn't that really really eat up my front tires?

I have an aussie in the front. And its great i have been running it for about six months and i got it used from my buddie so there is about a year on it and not problems. As far as tire wear in the rear just be easy on ther skinny pedal so the locker will disengage.

ohh so, under normal driving conditions the aussie locker will stay disengaged unless i get on it real hard? i want an ECTED electric locker but they dont make one for my axle and their reallly expensive

They engage with torque. So just in the corners just be a little easier on the skinny pedal. Just get the locker you will learn. I ran my jeep as a daily driver with a welded 8.8 for about six months. And yea there might have been a little more then normal wear. I have a little over two years on my toyo mt's and there is about another six or so months left on them.
