Default Half a 4x4 swap question.

I'm going to be buying just the 4WD (I have a 2wd and planned to do the swap) transmission by itself and having a shop install it so my Jeep will pass emissions and I'll finish the rest of the job later . I have a few questions

1. What should I give him to do JUST the transmission and rear driveshaft.

2. Can the transmission support its own weight. Like can I have it just sitting on the pan.

3. What should I service while I have it off. Torque converter? Anything of the sort .

Thanks guys!

you will likely need a 4wd crossmember to hold the trans properly in the jeep. also, you will need a transfer case. you won't necessarily need the linkage hooked up, but you will need to set the tc shift selector in 2wd manually, along with the proper length rear driveshaft.

this will at least get your jeep moving under it's own power. the rest, (front diff, tc shift linkage, front driveshaft, etc) can be done at a later time.

i don't think i'm missing anything, but if so, others will chime in.

as for the trans, i wouldn't do anything to it, if it was known working when pulled. the shop will fill the torque converter when he installs the trans, maybe just do a drain and fill with clean, new fluid. that's it. others will argue to do a filter change, that's up to you.

He shouldnt need to switch the trans cross member. I used the same one and same mount for my conversion. You should just need the trans, t-case and rear driveshaft for now. I think you will need to extend the VSS wire as well. I had to with my manual trans 4x4 conversion. If you need some t-case shifter linkage, I have a stock set I will give you. Just need the shifter handle to complete it.

Just to be sure, is the transmission going in from another 98-01? I ask because they use two transmission speed sensors, one output and one input. The older cases are setup for the output sensor only. Be sure the transmission is from another 98-01 before buying it.

BTW, your engine info under your avatar says 4 cyl 6L. Was that supposed to read 6 cyl 4L?

Yeah oops. I'll fix that.

Is there anything to extending the wires? Splice and solder? I have a trans and tcase in my sights to buy. I'll grab a driveshaft soon.

i didn't realize 2wd crossmember will work. but it does need to be auto crossmember to auto trans, and manual crossmember to manual trans tho.
but since you didn't specify, i'm sure you're staying auto. i guess you'll be fine.
