Going from 8.25 to D35.... mistake?
Just wondering if this is a big mistake. Found what seems to be a good deal on D30 4:56, and D35 4:56 for $400. I would like to go to lower gears, and possibly install a true trac front and lunch box rear, or maybe e-locker.
Does the fact that I want to add those traction devices to the diffs, mean I am just better off buying new R&P sets for my current diffs? Can a 8.25 be swapped for a D35 despite no ABS? There seems to be much more lockers to choose from for the D35. Coming from Yotas, working w/the "chunks" is much easier. I am still learning about what's involved in Jeeps.
TIA

How about this you do the swap and then I will trade you 2 D35's for 1 8.25.. Then you have spare parts.. Like Frankz said not a smart swap. I am looking for a D44 if I can't find one I'll go 8.25.

Yeah, I know the 8.25 is a better axle. I don't plan on going bigger than 34x10.50. I was just considering because of the deal I found. Why are there so many more locker options for that crappy diff? than the 8.25. I think mine is a 27 spline isn't it?

The only reason I could see doing it would be for the lower gears already in place. If those were the gears you wanted, you could just beef up the d35 to no end with a truss and alloy shafts and the whole shebang. But if you were planning on regearing the new ones than this would be a very silly swap. Just regear your current diffs and ARB makes a locker for the 8.25 i believe.
This is a bad idea IMHO

31s are pushing the D35 capabilities. then adding any traction device makes it that much more prone to break. now if said D35 had a Super 35 kit in it then it would be a different story.

Thanks for the info guys. So just for comparison.. About how much does it cost to regear my diffs? I have seen prices for 4:56 R&P sets for front and rear for about $325 w/no bearings... and about $425 w/master kits. Plus I also need new carriers.
I was not sure buying those already geared diffs anyway, because to add the traction devices, I'd have to re-do it anyway right? I know on Toyotas you can just pop them in for the most part.

DJ, check these guys out:http://fnjeep.com/default.asp
The guy that owns the place is named Thomas, and he is a pretty cool guy. They will have what you need in most cases, and if they don't have it, they might be able to point you in the right direction. HTH!!

Thanks COS! Do I have to email them for parts prices? They do installs and such too?
What does re-gearing Jeep diffs typically run?
