Default Fuel pump sending unit or fuel pump regulator??

So I recently was up north in my 1998 XJ straight 6 4.0L and it has no lift yet and me and my cousins were offroading and we get to a dead end trail so we turn our jeeps around and I didn't see this small tree stump so I drove over it and my jeep shut off and did not turn back on it was just cranking and cranking so I had my jeep towed back and to our campsite and the next day we go to a shop and he said I disconnected something into the gas tank like it was sending fuel to the top of the tank and nowhere else so he connected it keep in mind I'm camping and cannot drop a tank with no tools. So now it starts but very slow it cranks for a while and if I use my remote start it cranks and shuts off I have to turn the key and stop and do it like two times then it starts the third time right away is it the fuel pump regulator or the fuel pump sending unit? And I hear shaking back there too and it's bad but nothing I see is lose. Can anyone help??

Maybe some more information would help. Where did this tree stump hit? If it hit the tank pretty hard it could have broken the fuel pump inside the tank. The fuel pump assembly is spring loaded against the bottom of the tank.

x2 time to drop the tank with as little fuel in it as possible

It hit the gas tank but it starts up just cranks a lot longer so it's still working so it wouldn't be the fuel pump right?

hard to tell. Have you ever seen the fuel pump assembly? It's possible that there is a crack in one of the tubes connecting the the actual fuel pump to the pickup tube or to the fuel regulator.

I suppose if you want you could try getting the fuel pressure checked to make sure it around 50psi when running and holds pressure for a short time (at least 30psi for 15 to 20 minutes.

Either that or you can keep guessing.

Jbeaujean28,

Check the length of the fuel supply tube that runs along the left side under the Jeep, next to the brake line, from the pump (tank) to the fuel rail. It may have been pinched.
