Default Getting ready to do the Valve Cover Gasket

Getting ready to do this on Sunday. Anything in particular that I should know? Any tips or tricks?

Getting tired of the burning oil smell after driving it....the leak is not that bad...but I hate leaks!

I got the rubber gasket from Autozone....and it looks quality. I might even take some pics and see if Mods want to add it to the XJ writeup section.

i just did mine and tha only problem i hade was the throttle cable that runs over the cover has a plastic lining on it and when i went to put the cover back on i pulled the cable back and that plastic lining turned out to be old and brittle and broke int a bunch of little peices and fell into the top of the motor so i got to spend a half and hour pickin them out of the oil before i could put the cover back on.

clean the surfaces well and don't over torque the bolts or it will leak

Well....I got the task done...but it was a bit of work....not too too bad...but fun enough.

Taking off the valve cover itself was the hardest part. Had to remove the coolant hoses on the front of the motor to be able to get it off. Also I cracked the plastic track that the fuel injection wires run through....had the hardest time getting that piece to come off the studs. Looks like I had the rubber gasket...but...it was completely hardend...and flatten down.

Cleaned everthing very good and putting it back was a much easier.

so far looks good! No leaks....Ready for a cold beer!
