Pretty clearly looks off a tooth to me. Old post I know, but I always line it up first, before taking the old set off. Then, you want a straight edge to go from the center of the cam gear to the center of the crank gear. Not one you want to miss, can't spend too much time checking here.

You can also turn the engine over by hand two full revolutions, the dots either line back up, or they don't.

I agree!

In the past I have always removed the chain/gears ONLY WHEN the marks are aligned. I then reinstall insuring the marks are aligned. Never had a problem with this method.

Yeah this was on my last XJ I had. Before I knew what I know now. Turns out this one had other issues than the timing being off. Bottom end was about to go in it. So sold it and got one that had no issues.
