Default gearing question

i just got a non disconnect d30. it doesnt have the same gear ratio. can i just pull my gear setup out of my d30 and put it in the new one. i want to just pull the gears still connected to the spiders and plop it in the new one. can i do this or will it not work

I think it will AS LONG as its the same or close year and they are both either High Pinion or Low Pinion axels. If they are different in that aspect I do not believe they will work. Good Luck!!

No! The gears must be installed properly or you'll grenade the axle in no time flat. No two housings are exactly the same. Pinion depth, pinion rotating torque, bearing preload, backlash....all need to be correct.

Wow! there's so much more involved than just high vs. Low pinion. Advice like this could cause massive axle carnage for the OP.

why are you swapping in the first place?

and I second the post above mine...there is ALOT more to it.

if it's just a wheeling rig, you *could* just toss them in...as long as the only time the axle spends rotating is when it's wheeling. I'd highly advise against doing that.

im swapping because my axle is leaking from the seal by the disconnect. no big deal right, just change the seal. i already did, and when i did i noticed that someone before me did something to the inside where the seal seals. the inside of the axle right there is gouged? or something. well bottom line is it still leaks and im tired of filling it up. the non disco seals are both right in the diff, very easy. also no stupid fork to break. anyone want to buy a posi-lok cable for the disconnect axle?

thanks for the info guys. its going to suck without fourwheel drive for a while. can i unbolt my gears, and bolt them in the new axle using its shims? wouldnt it be the same then, because the shims are the only thing that change preload, backlash, and depth. correct? or am i missing something?

NO!

Every axle is different and installing gears is never as simple as just bolting them in and shifting into 4hi.

as frankz has said, all axles have different measurments inside because no two castings are the same. you need a new master install kit for a dana 30, and you need a professional to set up the gears. you don't have the ability or the tools to do it...hell, I can't even do it and I've swapped/installed/dealt with more axles than some.
