gear ratio ?

noob with questions... i have had this cherokee a week and figured out the front diff dont work.

im trying to figure out what gear ratio i have. I have a 88 cherokee pioneer 4x4, it has a reciever hitch but i dont think it is stock(it says draw-tite on it). i am trying to figure this out without pulling the diff cover, i plan on letting my mechanic do that at his shop. i bought this jeep cheap and just found out the front diff doesnt work on it. the drive shaft is turning but the wheels are not. or do i need to pull the diff cover and look and see what is exactly going on in there. thanks in advance...

oh yea strait 6 manual trans

%95 of autos are 3.55 gearing

%90 of standards are 3.07 gearing

it would be cheaper to buy a complete differential and swap it in youself.

Since you have a 88 it is most likely vacuum issue with the front axle disconnect. That is, provided your Jeep is equipped with the vacuum disconnect front axle. It is identified by an shift motor housing on the back of the axle housing on the passenger side. Some, but not all XJs through 91 had the vac disco axle which consists of a 2 piece passenger side axle shaft that is locked together by a collar within the shift motor housing. They are prone to vacuum line leaks, broken vacuum lines, and the shift motor itself failing.

well i went and looked at it and it does have one of the vacuum motors on it. so.... i will have to research that now over this unit. i believe i will pull the diff cover now that i believe its nothing major, cause the guy i bought it off swore up and down there wasnt any 4x4 problems. now i understand why i doesnt have lockers.

anybody have any hints or quick links to tronbleshooting this shift motor..
