Default gas tank wont fill after heat up?

when i try to fill up the gas tank i can only fill it up 3/4 of the way be for the pump shuts off?
what happened was i cut my exhaust pipe off right after the muffler. so it was pointed right at the gas tank. i guess not far enough away because it heated up the tank so hot that gas squirted out of the filler tube. i put a down dump on the pipe now but whats wrong with the tank?

You're lucky you and the Jeep are still around to ask questions.

You might have flooded your carbon cannister with liquid gasoline. It is supposed to only see vapor. Now the gas tank cannot "breathe" allowing the gasoline you are filling the tank with to displace the air inside the tank.

Just a theory.

Mine does thios exact same thing and this is how i get around it

When you put the pump in the filler neck dont slide it all the way down cause there is a sensor and if it reads to much it will shut them pump off.

Does this make any sense?

im just saying, with your exhaust pointed at your gas tank theres no way you should drive it that way. even pointed down. what you should do is replace the filler hose, the heat may have shrunk it. my old blue ford did this so i just filled it with jerry cans haha

the exhaust has been changed now with a dump and the tank does not get hot anymore. but when we went some where the other day he had to do like
XJ?2010 and move the pump tip up some and pump it in slowly. i used to have the same issue but it was fixed when i replaced my pump and housing but his is a 91 so it is not the same. its kinda confusing.
