Gas tank swap?
Anyone know how difficult this is? I'm aware of the safety risks, but how difficult is it to actually swap out a tank? I had some trouble with it at the J/Y

Dunno never done it but it doesn't look that hard. Let me guess you have a 13 gallon and want the 20 gallon?
I have read somewhere that both tanks are the same you just have to mod the 13gallon to fit 20 in it. Something about cuttting the neck or something I would have to search and read again to remember exactly.

If the tanks are the same it's easy just drain as much gas as you can. Use a floor jack to support it and start unbolting and such. lower it down a little to unplug the hoses and so on.. The reverse..I have changed out a few tanks in other cars so it should be fairly simply and straight forward.

I had a hell of a time fighting the hoses on the one in the j/y. Any tips to make those easier to disconnect.
@Stryker: I have a dented 20 gallon that's cracked and holding fuel like a 13 gallon. I'm trying to swap it out for a working 20 gal.

NECESSARY
The entire reason why I'm replacing my tank was I damaged it on a rock going up old mother hill (see my trail report in its respective section), cracking the tank. The gas tank cannot take a good solid hit from a rock, and with the XJ's low departure angle, it's vulnerable.

i've done a few on xj's. not that hard, original hoses seem to go back on easy enough.
just make sure you try to unbolt the straps. try not to have to cut the threaded rod or straps.
i think the straps are available, but the threaded rod isn't. we had to reuse one of the rods by sleeving it and welding it together.

replaced my tank 3 months ago, now the meter is showing @ max (=full tank) on the meter as 3/4..
checked it, meter in tank is straight (as in not bend...)
so not really sure what is going on, fuelwarning light comes on after only 450 K's (kilometers) should do about 700k's on a tank...
very strange...
does anyone have suggestions what it could be?
cheers,
Patrick

Gas Tank Armor.....VERY NECESSARY! I have an OEM skid plate I robbed off an 87 donor XJ that had the offroad package. I believe it is 3/16" thick. It's taken a few skids and light rock shots. Not really sure how it would stand up to a hard shot from a rock.

Any tips for making those hoses easier to come off? I literally could not disconnect the filler hose and vent from the tank when I took one off in the boneyard.

i grabbed the hose with plyers and spun it to break it loose then just work it out,
when i have a full tank of gas and im flexing so the back driverside is real low it leaks gas... is there on overflow on the top or do i have a hole on the top?
