gas tank door release lever

I just bought a 2000 jeep cherokee sport and need to fille the gas tank.
However, I can not find the lever to release the gas door. on my other vehicles the lever is at the bottom of the drivers seat or easily found any how.

Can anyone help>?

don't know if they changed it for the 2000, but my 97 sport has no lever, just go open it with your hand...

I have a 2000 Sport and it has no lever as well, just open by hand

theres your answer!

Mine can be a bit tricky some times, I'll just stick my key in the slot facing the rear of the jeep and pull it open that way. Or just press on the very edge of the door facing the front of the jeep and that will leverage it open. But I don't have fat fingers so I don't find it a problem most times to just open it...

Haha, I thought I might have one of those, too, considering they are now common and I have a 2001 (that's new, right?). I think I just press my thumb onto the left side and finger tips onto the right when the thumb pressure lifts it a bit.

I had the same problem when I got mine...there is no lever. All you do is push on the left side with your fingers and pull on the right side with your thumb or other hand. Luckily for me, I happened to know a Petroleum Distribution Engineer and he deals with these all the time

Has anyone installed a lever lock mechanism in their Cherokee? I really want to do it.

That added security. I mean why have ignition keys? It just adds a step for mischievous do no gooders.

...indeed, why? I understand the basic principal of being a deterrent, but it seems to be way overthought. Why not just get a locking gas cap?

Thats an extra key that doesn't need to be on my keyring or lost somewhere in the car.

I guess im in the minority when it comes to locking gas doors. I love those things.

I have the key ring I carry (fob, house key, and jeep key) then I have the ring that hangs on my cigarette lighter (trailer lock, keys for front and rear hitch pin and key for bike rack lock) just have a place you put your key and you won't lose it.
