Default Gas on my air filter

I was working on my '88 Limited yesterday (flushing the mud coloured fluid out of the rad & putting in nice clean coolant) - I decided to check on the air filter. On one end it was fairly clean but at the other (closest to the firewall) it was slightly crispy & had gasoline on the filter itself.

What would be causing this? EGR valve?

Damp - that part of the filter also looked & felt a bit crispy (a bit like partially burnt paper).

I've never heard it backfire or pop. She starts ok, first time, every time.

It does smell like she's running rich though. Only other thing that may be related is an occasional uneven idle (TPS/IAC?).
