Default gas gauge off?

On my 99 cherokee I fill up with gas and the gauge will show just about empty. After the tank is full the needle wont go all the way to the full mark. It will sit an 1/8 off the line. And im only getting 15 or 16 gallons in a tank. Should be more than that if its on empty and im only getting 220 miles out of it that's on the highway doing 65mph. Should be getting more than that right?

sounds like you might have a problem with the sending unit or float, whatever you want to call it on your fuel pump. this is a common problem on jeeps

I was thinking it had something to do with the float. The other day I filled it and it stayed at a half tank for a good ten min after it was filled

Can't understand. Did you mean to say that you "fill up with gas when" the gauge shows just about empty? Do you stop filling when the gas pump automatically stops? I usually top-off after the gas pump stops automatically. I even rock/shake the Jeep to make the foam (I assume it's foam) in the tank settle and then add more fuel. If anything, after I'm done my gauge reads almost 1/8th over the full mark. According to your numbers you're getting only about 14mpg (which is pretty close to normal but can be improved by as much as 5 more mpg). Start by topping-off more at fill-up (as described) then do the math for about three tankloads to get more reliable mpg numbers. BTW: Don't forget to keep an eye on tire pressure.

Sorry ment to say before I fill up the gauge will be at just about empty. And when I fill it up the gauge wont go to all the way full. And I top it off after it clicks. Can get another gallon in after it clicks off. And yeah I had a 2000 cherokee and I would fill up and the gauge would be like you said an 1/8 over the full line

Sounds like the float is getting a bit sticky. Ever hear of regularly adding Marvel Mystery Oil to your fuel (4 oz./10 gal.)? It does wonders for the entire fuel system and prevents sticky floats too - been using it in all my rides since my first in '74.

My 97 does the same thing with a new fuel pump float assembly the only way i figured out to make it work right is fill up with the fuel door facing up hill but that won't help u if you don't have a gas station nearby on a hill lol but good luck

I have to think it was the tank float that is messed up... you will have to pull the gas tank out to fix this either that or you had crap in your gas basically dirt... you can use a strong gas tank cleaner to maybe get the crap off that is sticking to the float...
