I see so much "sadness" of threads full of our old jeeps needing repairs to keep them on the road... and last night on the way home I had a great "Captain Obvious" moment with my jeep... so thought I'd start a thread to cheer each other up with funny stories like this
I just recently moved from out of state and so have a few things temporarily stored while my new house is being worked remodeled.
So.... It was a quiet night....I was driving inside the facility with walls that have great acoustics.... I had the drivers window down.... and I started hearing this clicking sound as I was driving slowly...and I was like WT bleep could that be?
I didn't think axle, really couldn't see it being U-joint but sounded like it was coming from up front. So was stumped... I was close to home and drove slow through the neighborhood heard it again.. man what the heck could this be.... I'm praying for nothing serious as my wife sitting next to me would absolutely LOVE for me to sell my beloved XJ for a truck.... she heard it too...
So we pull into the driveway... I get out... walk around the jeep... nothing obvious... so for giggles...As I'm checking to make sure it wasn't just a rock stuck in the treads... my hand hit the center cap on the front drivers side... and boom... was so loose I'm surprised that it didn't fall off. Sure enough.... click click click..... well... I felt a little dumb and relieved at the same time....

Ha, I had similar.
click click click while driving....had read up too much about the ujoint; convinced it had to be that.
Wise old men seeing me drive past both said:it's coming from the rear, mate. Me being stubborn, changed the left front ujoint...still click click click.
Left rear centre cap.

yeah... and Praise God I heard it and figured out what it was before it was too late... I've had to replace one of those before...and man it's hard to find one without paying an arm and a leg for it. I mean holy cow... a tiny piece of plastic centre cap.... you'd think it was made out of pure platinum the prices they charge for one...and forget finding one in a scrap-yard, those are the first things nic'd I think.

Genius!
I like the old style auto-fouler. Years ago when you used to be able to open the hood of a vehicle without releasing from the inside, my grandfather used to do this to friends / customers who gave him a hard time. You would hook it to an ignition positive source, so that when they turned on the key, you heard the loud whistle, pop, and then smoke. Now you could just plug it into a trailer plug as well.
You could not do this today, if they even still make them. They make a current style that just whistles and smokes.

Thinking this might kinda be one.
So I am doing compression test and pull the ASD relay.
After I am done and put the Jeep back together I start her.
Get a CEL.
I'm like WTF.
So I grab my scanner and it is a P1389.
My buddy Googles it real quick on his phone and says something about the ASD relay.
But then he says but it's running.
Took a couple seconds for it to dawn on me.
"Oh yeah huh". LOL.
